Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level extension is the single TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to obtain john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained functional.
